How to Make the Most of Couples Therapy

Before setting up an appointment:

Both of you must be willing to set aside enough time for therapy.  Usually, each session lasts two hours because most of the time 60 minutes is not enough to make progress. Be advised that it's very difficult to know beforehand how many sessions you will need because every case is different.  Some couples require extensive support while others need fewer sessions.  Bear this in mind when you set up your first appointment.

Before your first session:

  • Be on time. In fact, get here a few minutes before your appointment time. This way you'll be able to relax before the consultation.
  • Reflect on the reasons why you are seeking therapy.
  • Establish the type of relationship you want to build and the kind of partner you want to be.

During each session:

  • Avoid accusing and attacking your partner. Calmly verbalize the problem you're facing without being disrespectful or rude.
  • Focus on changing yourself instead of trying to force your partner to be someone else.
  • Be honest. When you hide behind a mask you're making your personal growth process more difficult.
  • Own your attitude. We are always responsible for the way in which we act. It doesn't matter how others have treated us.
